Friday April 9 2004

I’m in my homestay and this is really awkward! I’ve already made a huge mistake. A. only has one parent, M., both Ms D. and I assumed it was her mother. It’s her father. Luckily her grandparents also live here, because the father only speaks a few words of English, nowhere near enough for a coherent conversation. He also smokes inside, which is definitely going to take some getting used to, although apparently it’s quite common here.

I’ve hardly said two words to the family so because all my Japanese seems to have gone out the window! Apparently so has A.’s English! Either that or she’s just shy. They’re really nice though, they have two cats, a black one called Yu and big tabby called Go. At least I think that’s what their names are. Yu is friendly, and jumped onto my lap as soon as I sat down on the sofa, meowing loudly to get my attention, but Go seems to be more of an outside cat.

Today we went to Himeiji Castle, which is awesome, I took almost a whole roll of film! Much to our surprise, another strange man came up to J. and I and started asking for my camera. Even though it was only a disposable one, I was like “Um, how about no, how about I don’t just hand you my belongings!” It turned out that he wasn’t a robber though, he just wanted to take a photo of us. o.O.

Ms D. nearly left her bag behind, which was really funny, considering how many times she’s told us not to lose things!

Himeiji Castle with cherry blossoms out everywhere.

Looking out over the city from the top of the castle.

Saturday April 10 2004

Today A. and I went bowling and shopping with some of her friends and their homestay students which was fun. We also went to this big yellow department store called ‘Loft’ and saw M., A., E., D. and E.. This was good because I realised nearly everyone else was as nervous as me. According to E., S. and J. were also around there, although I didn’t see them, because their hosts sisters are best friends! I’m so jealous! At least they’re with someone they know!

NO PHOTOS TODAY, SADLY. :(

Sunday April 11 2004

Today my host family and I went to Kintaikyu Bridge (at least I think that’s why it’s called) which was cool. Kintaikyu’s this massive bridge with five arches. As a souvenir they gave me this box of little Hello Kitty figurines holding fruit and this pack of postcards with Kintaikyu on them. I’m not going to post them home though, I’m keeping them so I can stick them on my wall in my room!

Then we went out for lunch, and had yakitori (chicken kebabs). We saw one of A.’s friends and her homestay student too, but they were leaving as we were arriving so we didn’t talk to them.

Tonight we had a BBQ with her cousins, which was fun. N. is 18 and A. is 16. Their English was pretty good, and I discovered N. likes Donald Duck! They gave me presents too, a cute fan and this other strange thing which looked like sheets of paper with monkeys on it, I didn’t know what it was, and I still don’t!

The beautiful entrance to the school my host sister and her friends attended. MUCH prettier than my school in NZ!

Monday April 12 2004

More normal today, since our group was back together. We went to the Mazda car factory and museum, which was actually really interesting! We now have funny photos of S., Mrs K. and I climbing into the boot of one of the cars!

The one (horrid) photo I found on my laptop of this day. It was taken at the car factory.

Tuesday April 13 2004

Today we went to Miyajima Island, which was amazing! There are deer there, which were really friendly and cute! J., S. and I bought lucky charms for school success, which had better work since we’re in the I.B Programme this year! I did a lot of other traditional shopping today too. J. bought an ocarina, which is a very loud, shrill instrument! She knows it’s annoying too, which is probably at least part of the reason she bought it! Miyajima Island is probably my favourite place so far.

Famous Torii gate near Miyajima Island (Itsukushima Shrine).

One of the cute little deer that were everywhere on the island. They followed you around hoping for food.

View from the top of Mount Misen, which we went up via gondola.

Wednesday April 14 2004

The Peace Park was weird. It made me so sad, but the peace cranes were awesome, we made over 1000 and added them to the huge number already there. The Children’s Peace Monument was exactly like I imagined, it was like having deja vu!

It was all made so much more real by the museum. The first part was a little boring and touristy, but then they showed you things that were genuine. I’d heard about the watch stopped at 8:15 and the ‘shadow’ of someone who just dissolved, but this wasn’t the same as actually seeing them in reality. It isn’t possible to explain how it makes you feel.

We saw the A-dome too, which was one of the few buildings left standing. It had huge black crows nesting on it, which made it all the weirder!

One of the girls in our group, S., holding the 1000 cranes we made before we left New Zealand. We were astounded by how many were already there!

Children’s Peace Monument in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

Photograph taken while walking from the Peace Monument down towards the museum. The curved structure in the middle of the photo is the Memorial Cenotaph.

The Atomic Bomb Dome. Probably one of the best photos of the whole trip, taken by my friend J. This is my most vivid memory of Hiroshima, even more so than the people I knew.

This is Part 2 of a 4 part series requested on Twitter about my school trip to Japan in 2004 (Excuse the rambling writing style of my 16-year-old self!). This is an edited version of the diary I kept when I was there, and all the photographs were taken either by me, or by J. or B., the friends who are mentioned periodically.

Thursday April 8 2004

Today was one of the weirdest days of my life! We went on a huge ferris wheel on the top of a department store. J. and I were in an enclosed car with the teachers, which was funny, since Mrs K.’s afraid of heights and we were about 200 metres up! She almost had a heart attack when Ms D. climbed up and sat on the back of the seat to take a photo! She said ‘No, no, no! You’ll upset the balance! Oh kowai desu ne! We all just laughed at her and I was tempted to climb up too, but that might really have upset the balance!

We also discovered our convenience store and went shopping at this awesome place called Ame Mura (American Mall). I bought quite a lot of stuff, including earrings with Big Bird on them and a rubber peanut, which is funny.

There are also some very strange men here. While we were waiting for our teachers to come back to the meeting place at the end of the afternoon, we were approached by two men who kept asking us if we were British or American. One tried to touch A.’s leg and another one stroked my arm as he went past! o.O When the teachers got back Mrs K. shouted at them to go away, but then realised they didn’t speak English, so she shouted in Japanese instead! Ergh. I hope that was just a one-off incident and we don’t have to experience much more of that!

Tomorrow we’re going to Hiroshima for 6 nights in a homestay! I’m excited but scared too. I’ve no idea what to expect, but it should be fun. We’re also going to Himeji Castle tomorrow. I’ve seen photos of it and it’s touristy looking, but very pretty.

At the moment we’re staying in this weird little hotel with tiny rooms. The bathroom is raised from the floor and for some reason our electricity’s a bit odd. If you touch the door handle of the bathroom and leave one foot on the floor, you get an electric shock! It scared the crap out of me the first time it happened, and J. didn’t believe it really zapped me, until it happened at 1 o’clock in the morning and also made the bedside lamp on her side of the room flick on and off randomly!

Another thing you notice about Japan as soon as you arrive, are all the vending machines! It’s crazy! There’re just rows of them in the street! They sell hot and cold drinks, which is kind of strange. Some also sell alcohol (beer) and cigarettes, which would be unheard of (and probably illegal) back home! Surprisingly hardly any sell food though!? The vending machines are so convenient, I’ll miss them when we leave!

Myself and my lovely blurry edited friends eating okonomiyaki on our first night in Osaka. I was the most tired I had probably ever been in my life, thus the exasperated expression on my face! Also, please note the Big Bird earrings I mentioned earlier!

The giant ferris wheel we went on!

Ame Mura. Please note the large, fake Statue of Liberty on top of the building in the background!

1. What did you dream of being when you were a little child?
I can't remember actually, probably something really awesome and famous.

2. What did you think you might become when you were between the ages of 12-13?
Oddly enough, I kind of wanted to be a lawyer! It was the first "real" job that I ever really thought about, although strangely, by the time I was old enough to be thinking about what to study at university, I never considered studying law at all!

3. What career choices did you consider as a young adult?
When I finished high school and entered university, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Social Work. By the end of my first semester I concluded that perhaps I was a bit young for this kind of job at 18 and transferred into a B.A. majoring in Sociology, which is what I've ended up with now I'm finished.

4. Did you follow along one of the career paths you considered?
Not really. At the moment I'm working as an ESOL teacher and I'm planning to follow through with this and hopefully move overseas to teach in the next year or so, although, that said, I still haven't completely ruled out going back to university and studying towards a social work or counselling degree at some point later in life.

5. Have you changed careers since then? Was it by choice or necessity?
I'm only 22, so no, not really, I've only just STARTED my first "serious" career, so haven't changed anything. Yet.

I’ve had quite a lot of people comment on my 5000 Question Survey posts asking me where on earth I found this thing, and I just realised that I never answered any of you! I’m really sorry about this, I didn’t intentionally ignore you!

Unfortunately I don’t actually KNOW where I got it from! I had it up on my website LONG ago (as in, several years ago!) and recently rediscovered it on my hard-drive and decided it might be fun to post it properly, since I never got through it all the first time.

I typed it into Google and did come up with a few links to what I THINK is the whole thing, and the best one is probably HERE, on Livejournal.

If anybody else is keen on joining me in doing this mammoth task, please feel free! Let me know and I’ll follow your progress with great interest.

Also, a couple of people are already doing it…although they’re much further down the track than I am!

119. Is there anything really interesting in your family history? Kind of, but probably no more so than other families.
120. Is there anyone you trust completely? No, but there are a few people who collectively have my complete trust.

I FAIL at life. Although Miss 15 and Master 13 gave me their email address before they left, I still haven’t emailed them! At first I was in two minds over whether or not I should do so, due to the whole “teacher-student-professional-boundary-thing” but then I figured that since they gave me their address, they obviously want to hear from me, and they’re also coming back at the end of the year, so I feel as if I should keep in touch, considering it’s likely I will see them again!

I have a break this week from any and all teaching (aside from a couple of hours on Monday morning where I’m filling in for another tutor), but after that I’ll have a new girl (who I’m guessing will be about 11 or 12), every morning for a week, and then another boy (around 9 or 10) for 3 hours three mornings a week “until further notice”. I don’t know much about these two other kids yet, aside from the fact that the girl’s English is “fluent” and the boy is a total beginner. Could be interesting!

Yesterday I rang to request an application pack for CELTA, which is, according to my manager at work, the very best ESOL qualification available. The one I’m looking at starts somewhat later than I would like (January 2010), but it’s spread over the right amount of time (10 weeks) and is at a campus in the middle of town, so it seems like a pretty good fit.

So that’s me! Today I cleaned a bit of my bedroom (it’s going to be my major project for this week I have off!), organised my bookshelf by colour, and discovered a box full of old letters and cards from penpals I wrote to when I was in high school! I wonder if any of them have blogs! HAH! What an odd thought.

I know that to some of you this might be rather old news, but I still think it raises an interesting debate, and, since, in answer to my recent question, A LOT of people said they wanted more posts like this, I figured I’d post this to see whether you think the judges in Holland made the right decision or not.

Dutch sailor girl put under care

A Dutch court has put a 13-year-old girl under state care for two months, stalling her bid to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

The decision by three Utrecht judges means Laura Dekker’s parents, who support her plans, temporarily lose the right to make decisions about her.

A child psychologist will now assess her capacity to undertake the voyage.

Miss Dekker says she is happy with the ruling, but she will try to convince the authorities to let her set sail.

“I haven’t had the same upbringing as so many other children,” she told the Dutch television programme, NOS Jeugdjournaal, in her only comments after the ruling.

“Sailing has always played an important role in my upbringing and that’s why I want to do this now,” she added.

Source

Interestingly, I read on another website that she believes that if she were a 13 (now 14) year old BOY, her case would have been given more consideration. Do you think this is likely?

In other news, I’m two days away from a whole WEEK of holidays (YAY!) so keep your eyes open for a new theme at some point. I like this purple, but I want to try something new, too.

I really should have posted this last weekend, but I only loaded the photos onto my camera a couple of days so am doing it now instead.

Last Sunday we went out for dinner for my birthday. We went to a teppanyaki restaurant which, to cut a long story short, had deep-fried cheesecake on the dessert menu. As much as it sounds like it ought to be featured on This Is Why You’re Fat, we decided that SOMEONE had to order it, just to see what it was like. Since it was my birthday, I volunteered.

Disgustingly unhealthy, but really tasty! :D

That’s the GOOD photo. Before this one was taken (by my aunt), we had the bright idea to have me in it too, tilting the plate up towards the camera so the dessert could be easily seen.

Just as she is about to take the photo, I hear Jenny shouting “Watch out for your ice cream!”. Aforementioned ice cream had, perhaps unsurprisingly, begun to slide along the plate and come extremely close to heading onto the table. What resulted is undoubtedly THE least flattering photo of me you will ever see on this blog…

Don’t say I never laugh at myself. Also, please note my completely oblivious father in the background. It seems that he was not as alarmed by the escaping ice cream as I was!

Today was my last day with the two Korean teenagers who have been studying in NZ since the end of July! A huge group of tutors and kids went out for dinner tonight and before they left they gave me cute thank you cards and took photos. For obvious reasons I’m not going to post the pictures, but here’s what the cards said..

From Miss 15…

Dear Holly,
Thanks for teaching us. We wanted to came back here because we liked New Zealand and also *name of tutoring center*, too.
I thought we much better than to speak english.
I miss you when us go back to Korea.

From Master 13…

Dear Holly.
Hello Holly I am *name*. Thanks for study I like your study. It was so excited.
Maybe my English level will grow up
I will cry a lot.
I want to see you again.
Bye
See you soon

Hmm, Monday will be very quiet, and very strange! As for the “see you soon” references, they might be coming back to New Zealand for Christmas, but nothing is definite yet and even if they do come, there’s so guarantee that I’d be teaching them again. I would try and visit them though, to see if their English level really did “grow up”!

81. If you (and everyone) had to lose one right or freedom, but you could pick which one everyone had to lose, what would you pick? The right to smoke in public.
82. If you had to choose would you live on the equator or at the North Pole? Equator. I hate being cold, but I could definitely get used to being hot all the time.
83. Would you rather give up listening to music or watching television? TV
84. What do you think makes someone a hero? Not wanting or needing to do something, but choosing to do it anyway, even when there’s nothing in it for them personally.
85. What cartoon would you like to be a character in? Hmmm…Blue’s Clues! I’d be a cat!
86. Name one thing that turns your stomach: Eel sushi
87. What was the last thing you paid for? A movie ticket and popcorn
88. Are you a coupon clipper? Not usually
89. Get anything good in the mail recently? A birthday card from my aunt.
90. Which would you rather take as a gym class…dancing, sailing, karate, or bowling? Dance class!
91. In Star Trek people ‘beam’ back and forth between different places. What this means is they stand in a little tube and their molecules are deconstructed and sent to another tube somewhere else where they are reassembled. Only problem is when the molecules are deconstructed the person is dead. When they are put back together it is only a clone that has all the dead person’s memories, so is the person who gets beamed the same person on both ends? I guess it depends on what you believe constitutes the person, whether it’s their physical form, or their psychological being…yes, I think it’d be the same person, if it looked the same, felt the same, had the same memories and responded the same as the pre-beamed person did.
92. What insects are you afraid of? Huge ones, or ones that bite/sting.
93. If you could print any phrase on a T-shirt, what would it say? I’m not sure, actually!
94. What’s the most eccentric thing you have ever worn? No idea
95. If you could pick one food that you could eat all you wanted but it would have no effect on how much you weigh, what food would it be? Pringles.
96. What are your parents interested in? Mum likes art and music, and I have no clue what Dad likes actually…
97. Have you ever caught an insect and kept it as a pet? No
98. What is more helpful to you, wishes or plans? Plans
99. When do you feel your life energy the strongest? When I’m not dead! Hah!
100. You are spending the night alone in the woods and may bring only 3 items with you. What do you bring? Sleeping bag, torch, cellphone

Today is my 22nd birthday. Oddly, the first birthday I’ve had in awhile where I actually DO feel “older”. I know I’m really NOT much older, I’m only one day away from being 21, but I feel a bit LESS like a teenager than I used to. Although maybe that’s more because of having discovered a possible future career as opposed to having had my birthday. I don’t know. Hmm..

Been having a pretty good birthday so far, had lunch with Lorraine and then went to the second-to-last rehearsal for my drama class before their performance next Saturday. It…wasn’t a complete disaster, but it could have gone a great deal better.

Speaking of drama, I was greatly..er…amused/embarrassed when I went to put my camera back in my bag after having taken a photo for the programme for next weekend and turned around to see Colleen (my friend/other tutor) and one of the older girls grinning at me conspiratorially. A few seconds later the entire class and several parents started singing Happy Birthday. LMAO! I was really rather embarrassed, but it was pretty funny; and cute.

Not celebrating my birthday tonight, since my friend’s mum is celebrating her 60th birthday with a party at a restaurant, but we are going out again tomorrow for MY birthday, which is ok – like having two birthdays!

Hope everyone else is having a nice weekend!

Earlier this week my lovely ESOL students and I were doing some research projects about birds. As part of the process, we were Googling for various types of birds and looking at pictures of them on Google Images.

After viewing photos of everything from flamingos to swans to linnets, Master 13 asked me to look up the “Great Tit”. Because the computer I was on isn’t usually used by children, the Google Safe Search function was turned off (nobody looks for questionable material anyway, so up until now it was never an issue). I’m sure you can imagine the kinds of pictures that greeted me!! Luckily the kids weren’t standing next to me at the time, and didn’t see any of the “adult images”, but I was still rather disturbed, and promptly set Safe Search to “Strict”, which was just as well, since they later asked me to look up “Shag” and (Blue Footed) Booby”!

The Blue Footed Booby is awesome, by the way. His blue feet rock.

Tomorrow: Holly is officially 22. o.O

…something really awesome happened to me today.

I was in the supermarket and there was a long queue at the checkout. I was standing waiting when a woman comes up behind me, taps my shoulder and indignantly says “Excuse me. I was here first.” Um…no she wasn’t. If she’d been there, I would have seen her!

I was really annoyed at how rude she was, but not being in the mood to argue, and not being in a hurry to get anywhere else anyway, I let her go in front of me and just stood there glowering at the back of her.

Thirty seconds later, another supermarket employee walks past us and goes to open the counter next door. She then catches my eye and gestures for me to come and be served by her. I don’t know whether she had seen Rude Lady push in front of me or not, but it made my day, especially since, as I was walking back past the supermarket entrance again after having gone to buy something else, Rude Lady was STILL waiting behind 4 or 5 other people.

HAH!
*may or may not have done charming smile/wave combination in her direction as I passed by*

I seem to be developing a little bit of an obsession with Etsy. Not only does it make me extremely jealous of the people who are awesome and creative enough to HAND MAKE all of these things, but it also makes me wish I had a unlimited credit card, so I could go on there and buy THEIR ENTIRE SITE. Seriously. Except for the taxidermy section, because that is just weird.

1. Lilac Hair Pins: I don’t usually wear hair pins, since I have such a lot of hair they tend to get lost in it, but these are so CUTE!
2. Quilted Pillow Cover: I kind of want to eat this. It would not match my bedroom in the slightest, but it’s so pretty!
3. Pink Weave Laptop Sleeve: This is something I actually do need. Kind of.
4. Round Kitty: Look at it! It’s so FAT!
5. Mimi the Mermaid: Kind of ugly, kind of beautiful I can’t QUITE decide…
6. Deep Purple Hemp/Cotton Bag: Love purple. Love bags. :D
7. Feather Headband: It took me awhile to work out whether or not I liked this. In the end I think Brooke got it right when she said that it’d be awesome for going out, but a bit strange for just wearing normally. Even though I totally would!
8. Butterflies: I would TOTALLY use these for scrapbooking! Man I wish I could crochet!
9. Patricia: OMG. *want* Could she be any cuter if she tried! I want a teddy bear!!
10. Personality Type button: Hahah I don’t know how seriously I take the Myers Briggs test, but it’d still be funny to wear one of these!
11. Lap Quilt: I just really liked the colours of this, they’re the same as my bedroom!
12. Glitter Hearts: No clue what I’d do with these, I just think they’re awesome and sparkly!

What awesome things have you seen/bought on Etsy lately?
